I have some really great news for you: It's been a great year at the movies so far, and we're not even into December. TV seems to have been dominating the cultural zeitgeist lately, (the weeks spent trying to figure out the killer in White Lotus season 2 will stay with me forever) but the movies are where it's at. Have you been to the theater lately? It's popping. It's fun. It's a communal experience. The popcorn is great. Here are the movies that have already come out this year that you've heard of and loved, mixed with some gems to expect in the back half that might become your new favorites. Let's get into it.

1

'M3GAN'

This movie earned a spot on the list wayyyy back in 2022 when the dance went viral, TBH. Thankfully, the actual movie lived up to the hype.

'Women Talking'

Yes, I did also include this in a roundup of the best movies of 2022, because it premiered in 2022. But technically it hit theaters in 2023, so it still counts! This movie follows a group of women who have been suffering abuse at the hands of the men in their community for years, and have to decide whether they can actually leave it behind.

'Somebody I Used to Know'

This movie also proves the rom-com is back, but in a breakup kinda way. Alison Brie and Jay Ellis star in this truly underrated movie about a girl who goes back to her hometown just in time to realize her ex is getting married. Sounds Hallmark-y, but it's not!

'Air'

I love this movie, sue me! It's about the process of signing Michael Jordan to Nike, and creating what would eventually be Air Jordan. It's a movie about capitalism that is surprisingly uplifting!

'You Hurt My Feelings'

Julia Louis-Dreyfus plays a writer who overhears her husband (Tobias Menzies) say that he doesn't like her latest book. If you've literally ever had a fight with a significant other, this one's for you.

'The Little Mermaid'

After literal years of waiting, we finally got Halle Bailey's Little Mermaid movie. And guess what? It made me sob nostalgic tears.

'Past Lives'

I know this is a full list of best movies of the year, but this is the BEST movie of the year, bar none. The premise: Nora's family moved from South Korea when she was a child, and years later, she reconnects with her childhood crush. It's a film that'll make you think about all the ways your life could have gone differently.

'Asteroid City'

Wes Anderson's summer hit takes place at a Junior Stargazer/Space Cadet convention, where a group of families encounters something... otherworldly. It's very charming and will make you want to hug your parents.

'No Hard Feelings'

Jennifer Lawrence reclaims her throne! And she finally gets to be both hot and funny in this movie about her adventures trying to help an 18-year-old grow up. It's hilarious and a little bit heartfelt, too.

18

'Red, White & Royal Blue'

Yes, this is a film about a fictional American president's son who dates a fictional (but definitely inspired by Prince Harry) Prince of England. It's cheesy, it's silly, it's a little bit sexy. Watch it!

This high school buddy comedy starring Rachel Sennott and Ayo Edebiri is hilarious. Like, hilarious. They play two girls who hatch a ploy to date the most popular girls at their school, and it involves creating a fight club. Yeah, you read that right.
